ICLEI Korea Office (Director Park Yeonhee) organized and launched the ICLEI Korea Executive Committee(hereafter K-ExCom) to be acting as the governance body and taking the lead of ICLEI’s activities and sustainability policy actions of members in South Korea at the Annual Assembly of ICLEI Korea Members 2021 taken place online 23 February.

Chaired by Yeom Taeyoung, mayor of Suwon as well as ICLEI GexCom/RexCom member, K-Excom consists of seven members representing respective portfolios and the Korea Office. 

The seven members of the committee will be leading local sustainable development policies in the respective thematic area and representing ICLEI Korea members focusing on their own portfolio for the term of 2021-2023. 

Mayor Yeom Tae-young, the chairperson of K-ExCom, stated “It has taken 18 years to set up governance body for ICLEI’s activities in Korea since the opening of ICLEI Korea Office hosted by Korean Foundation for the Globalization of Local Governments in 1995.”, and asked the committee members to act the pivotal role in gathering efforts and achievements of Korean local government to exemplify the power of solidarity. 

At the annual assembly, ICLEI KO released the voice of leading mayors for sustainability delivering the ambitious voices of nine mayors of Changwon-si, Dangjin-si, Dobong-gu, Hwaseong-si, Seodaemun-gu, Seongnam-si, Songpa-gu, Suwon-si, Yuseong-gu. In addition to the participation with recorded videos, four mayors from Dangjin-si, Dobong-gu(of Seoul), Gangdong-gu(of Seoul), Hwaseong-si virtually participated in session 1 and shared their experiences on energy transition, education for sustainable development, urban agriculture, and sustainable mobility respectively with the moderation of mayor Yeom, and followed by KO’s briefing on ICLEI’s activities in 2020 and plan for 2021.
