The Race to Zero Ahead of COP26

COP26 takes place in Glasgow, 1-12 November 2021. This is the moment when the world must come together to realise the ambition of the Paris Agreement and commit to early action to achieve a Net Zero world by 2050.
Recognising that national governments alone are unable to deliver Net Zero, in Glasgow we will seek to convene not only world leaders, but also cities, provinces, businesses and the global investor community.
Cities in particular, have a key role in delivering a climate resilient future. Since President Moon Jae-in committed the Republic of Korea to 2050 Net Zero in October 2020, local governments in Korea have moved quickly to set carbon neutrality targets.
In order to realise the ambition set out in the Paris Agreement, I would like to encourage Korean Cities to join the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change’s Race To Zero campaign, ahead of COP26. As things stand there are 454 global cities committed to Race To Zero.

Science-Based Climate Targets will enable your city to establish measurable, actionable and time-bound objectives, which align with the actions which scientists tell us, must be taken, in order to avert the worst of the climate catastrophe.
City-level leadership through the Race To Zero is crucial in supporting greenhouse gas emission reduction targets at the national level and in connecting stakeholders across society towards one common goal.
The British Embassy Seoul is partnering with ICLEI to help Korean cities join in the Race to Zero. I look forward to seeing Korean cities join in global efforts to achieve a Net Zero world by 2050.

UNFCCC COP26에 앞서 한국 지방정부들의 레이스투제로 캠페인 참여를 권유합니다

2021년 11월 1일부터 12일까지 영국 글래스고에서 제 26차 유엔기후변화협약 당사국총회 (COP 26)가 개최됩니다. COP26은 파리협정의 목표를 실현하고 2050년까지 탄소중립을 달성하기 위한 빠른 행동을 취하기 위해 전 세계가 함께 모이는 순간입니다.
중앙정부 단독으로는 탄소중립 목표를 달성할 수 없습니다. 이에 우리는 글래스고에서 각 국가 지도자들뿐만 아니라 도시 및 지방정부, 기업 및 글로벌 투자자들과 함께 회합하고자 합니다.
도시는 기후 회복력이 있는 미래를 만드는 데 있어 특히 중요한 역할을 합니다. 2020년 10월 문재인 대통령이 대한민국의 2050 탄소중립을 선언한 이후, 한국의 도시 및 지방정부 역시 탄소중립 목표 설정을 위해 발빠르게 움직이고 있습니다.
파리협정에 명시된 목표를 달성하기 위해, COP26에 앞서 한국의 도시 및 지방정부들이 UN 기후변화협약에서 진행하는 Race to Zero 캠페인에 동참하기를 바랍니다. 현재 전 세계 454개 도시 및 지방정부들이 Race to Zero 캠페인에 참여하고 있습니다.

과학기반 기후 감축목표를 통해 전 세계 지방정부들은 측정 및 실행 가능하고, 기한을 특정한 목표를 설정할 수 있습니다. 이 목표는 기후 재앙이라는 최악의 상황을 피하기 위해 과학자들이 우리에게 권고하는 행동과 일치합니다.
Race to Zero 참여를 통한 지역 및 지방정부의 리더십은 국가의 온실가스 감축 목표에 기여하는 것과 사회 내 다양한 이해관계자들을 연결하여 하나의 목표를 향해 나아가도록 하는 중요한 역할을 합니다.
주한영국대사관은 ICLEI와의 협력을 통해 한국의 도시와 지방정부들이 Race to Zero 에 가입할 수 있도록 돕고 있습니다. 한국의 도시와 지방정부들이 2050 탄소중립 달성을 위한 국제적인 노력에 함께하기를 바랍니다.
